The beauty of this funnel? Most ideas die at Stage 1 or 2, which takes less than an hour total. You only invest serious time in ideas that have already passed the basic filters.

The Scoring Rubric

For each idea that made it to Stage 3, I scored it across five dimensions:

Week 1: Humbling Beginnings (Ideas 1-12)

The week that taught me humility.

I entered Week 1 convinced that I already knew which ideas were good. I had a mental list of "sure things" from my idea notebook, accumulated over years. Surely at least half would pass validation?

Results: 0 out of 12 passed all four stages.

What I thought: "Researchers have thousands of bookmarks. Current solutions are terrible. This is obviously needed!"

What I thought: "Podcasting is exploding. Editing is painful. This is the Uber for podcast editing!"

The lesson: High search volume ≠ opportunity. The market was already well-served. People weren't actively looking for new solutions—they already had them.

Week 1 was brutal. But it was also clarifying. I realized that my "instincts" about good ideas were essentially worthless. The market doesn't care about instincts.

The week where things started making sense.

After Week 1's massacre, I changed my approach. Instead of testing ideas I was emotionally attached to, I started looking for ideas that matched emerging patterns.

I switched from "ideas I think are cool" to "problems I've personally experienced and paid to solve."

The genesis: I remembered spending hours creating proposals when I did UX consulting. I'd bought templates, hired people to help, complained to peers. A real pain point I'd actually paid to solve.

The validation: - Search volume: 1,200/month for "ux proposal template" - Competitors: Generic proposal tools, nothing UX-specific - Community test: Posted in a UX community, got 23 comments and 8 DMs asking when it would launch

The week I learned to trust the process.

By Week 3, I had developed a rhythm. More importantly, I had developed intuition—not about which ideas were good, but about which ideas were worth testing further.

Every successful validation fell into that middle zone. This insight alone eliminated about 30% of ideas before I even started research.

Idea #31: Client Portal for Web Developers

I'd been frustrated by the clunky ways I shared project updates with clients. Basecamp was overkill. Email was chaos. There had to be something better.

The validation: - Search volume: 5,400/month for "client portal for web development" - Competitors: Existed but universally hated (I read 100+ negative reviews) - Community signal: One Reddit post asking for alternatives had 340 upvotes

This idea hit different. Not just because the numbers were good, but because the emotion in the community discussions was intense. People were genuinely frustrated. They wanted something better.

That's not mild annoyance. That's pain. And pain pays.

The "Reverse Engineering" Technique

Week 3 also taught me a powerful technique: instead of starting with ideas, start with successful products and work backward.

Here's how it works:

  1. Find a successful product in a category (e.g., a Chrome extension with 500K+ users)
  2. Read their 1-star and 3-star reviews obsessively
  3. Identify recurring complaints
  4. Build a solution that addresses those specific complaints for a subset of their users

This technique led to Idea #34: a simplified version of a popular screenshot tool, specifically for customer support teams. The original tool was powerful but overwhelming. Support agents just wanted quick screenshots with annotations.

It didn't pass Stage 4 (the market was too niche), but the technique was solid.


Week 4: Final Sprint and Winners (Ideas 39-47)

The week I found my focus.

By Week 4, I wasn't desperately searching anymore. I was systematically exploring adjacent spaces around the three winners from previous weeks.

Idea #39: Template Marketplace for Notion

Notion was exploding in popularity. Power users were creating amazing templates. But there was no good way to buy and sell them.

The validation: - Search volume: 14,000/month for "Notion templates" - Competitors: A few Gumroad sellers, no dedicated marketplace - Community: Multiple posts requesting exactly this

But here's where experience kicked in: I realized this was actually a terrible idea for me. Why?

  1. Platform risk: Notion could build this themselves (they eventually did)
  2. Low margins: Template marketplaces are race-to-the-bottom
  3. No founder-market fit: I wasn't a Notion power user

High search volume. Clear demand. Still a bad idea for me.

The 7 Patterns That Predicted Success

Across 47 ideas, these patterns separated winners from losers:

Pattern 1: Personal Pain + Data Confirmation

Every winning idea started with a problem I'd personally experienced. But personal experience wasn't enough—the data had to confirm widespread demand.

The formula: Personal pain ✓ + Search volume ✓ + Competition gaps ✓ = Worth pursuing

Pattern 2: The Goldilocks Search Volume

As I mentioned: 1,000-10,000 monthly searches. Too small means nobody cares. Too big means you can't compete.

Pattern 3: Angry Communities

The best signals came from communities where people were actively frustrated. Not mildly annoyed. Frustrated. Complaining. Seeking alternatives.

Emotion = urgency = willingness to pay.

Pattern 4: Weak Competitor Reviews

If existing solutions have 4.5+ stars with thousands of reviews, move on. If they have 3.5 stars with lots of "but I wish it could..." reviews? That's your opening.

Pattern 5: Niche Before Feature

"A simpler version of X" fails. "X, specifically for Y audience" works.

Always niche down by audience, not by feature set.

Pattern 6: B2B > B2C (for solo founders)

Every winning idea was B2B. Businesses pay more, churn less, and are easier to reach than consumers. If you're a solo founder, B2B is almost always the better path.

Pattern 7: Adjacent to Existing Skills

The ideas that scored highest were ones where I had relevant experience. Not because I was biased—because I genuinely understood the problems better.

What I Got Wrong (And What I'd Do Differently)

This experiment wasn't perfect. Here's what I'd change:

Mistake 1: Spending Too Long on Obvious Failures

Some ideas were clearly terrible, but I still ran them through the full process "for consistency." That was dumb. If Stage 1 data is bad, kill it immediately.

The fix: Set hard cutoffs. <500 searches? Dead. Move on in 10 minutes, not 45.

Mistake 2: Not Talking to Enough Humans

I over-relied on data and under-relied on conversations. The best insights came from actual conversations with potential customers, but I only did this for the top 5 ideas.

Some validations were "strong yes" and others were "weak maybe." But I didn't track this systematically, which made comparison harder.

Status: Started building, then pivoted into a broader freelance invoicing tool.

The initial validation was accurate—demand existed. But during development, I realized the real problem was the entire invoicing workflow, not just reminders. So I expanded the scope.

Key learning: Validation tells you what problems exist. Building reveals what problems are connected. Be willing to expand or pivot based on what you learn.

Winner #3: Client Portal for Web Developers

Status: This became my main focus and is still running today.

This idea scored highest for a reason—the pain was intense, the competition was weak, and I had deep founder-market fit. It's now a profitable SaaS serving several thousand customers.

Key learning: The highest-scoring idea often is the best choice. Don't second-guess the data.

The Meta-Lesson

Here's what 47 validated ideas taught me about startups:

Ideas are cheap. Validation is valuable. Building without validation is expensive.

The worst outcome isn't finding out your idea is bad. The worst outcome is spending a year building something and then finding out it's bad.

I spent about 60 hours on this validation sprint. That's less than two weeks of full-time work. And it saved me from potentially years of working on the wrong thing.
